It has to have been at least fifty years since I saw Wayne Newton make a guest appearance on I Love Lucy, delivering up a Southern idiom that has resonated ever since: “I feel like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”
Thanks again for a “just what I needed” post. My smiles are few & far between these days~usually a smile/cry video of some wonderful person bringing a starving puppy with only 3 legs & blind in one eye back from the brink! It really is the little things and there are some decent strangers out there looking for a smile. I hope we can be there for each other. PS~I’m glad to hear Levon’s better. Take care, Spike~we really need you out there…
Thank you so much. You made me laugh—the three-legged blind puppy being brought back. I LOVE THOSE VIDEOS. It really is so hard right now. I’m glad we can be there for each other.
Such a beautiful article, thank you! I got chatting with an elderly gentle man at the bus stop. He talked about loves lost and found aswell as his career as a professional speed walker (I didn’t realise it has been around for 100 years as a sport!!). When we got off the bus he helped me cross a big road. I had my cat in a cat carrier (heavy) and it saved me walking quite far to the pedestrian crossing. He had a cane and showed me how to efficiently slow traffic by putting out one’s hand. He asked me my name and smiled saying it was an unusual name for an unusual person which I took as a compliment! That exchange is still making me happy 3 days later!
happy to hear that I am officially a ranch hand now. I used to have a ranch where we had a lot of unplanned adventures because we didn't know anything about animals when we moved there from the city.
I was chased by the bull, and chased by the steer, and chased by a couple of other steers belonging to neighbors. Happy to report I am still alive.
Speaking of random acts of kindness, spike, I always am cheered by photos of your smiling face. I think you lift a lot of people's spirits and that is perhaps plenty enough in these difficult times.
Hi Anitra, Thanks for being a ranch hand! I had a showdown with a bull once and it was terrifying. So glad we both lived to tell. I’m glad my posts lift your spirits. It lifts my spirits to write and share them. Being able to connect helps me so much. I really am struggling right now but doing everything I can to keep my head up. ♥️
This is the 3rd time today I’ve read about small kindnesses that in our world today are not small at all. This is how we human. This is how we create community. I’m trying to wear life loosely and be open to kindness all around. Somedays it’s all I have. I very happy to hear Levon in on the mend.
I always get amnesia about what a big rush of relief and happiness I feel over even a very small act of kindness. Helps me to keep my footing or regain it when I’ve lost it. ♥️
I absolutely loved this post. You perfectly captured my own up and down days. Esther’s is a great antidote. Hang in there Spike, the world needs you!
Thank you so much. Sorry it’s bumpy for you, too but glad we can console each other.

Oh my gosh! I LOVE this story! So glad you and that guy found each other. I’m sure he was equally thrilled to make the connection.
Oh thank you for reading!!

Small acts of kindness can make such a difference. Thanks for the reminder. 💖

Excellent words. My favorite pairing was “nice” and “reserved”. Beautiful.
Thank you Emily! ♥️
